The Role
In the end, I had a fantastic time within KPMG, and wished I could have stayed longer. The first couple of days were a bit like being chucked in at the deep end, and work was something you had to push for. Once I got to know people, though, everyone was more than keen for my help and this only improves as you prove yourself.
Obviously some tasks proved menial but this would be the case at any entry level job. Besides, it all makes the day go faster in the end! The largest project I worked on saw me in the place of a graduate trainee, and I felt highly valued and included by all my colleagues, who were all great, understanding and happy to help me out if needed.
This again varied depending on the team/person I was working with, but in general the task was given to me in a way that I could understand, remembering my lack of experience with such work before. Any questions I had were answered straight away and I didn't feel like I was disrupting anyone, despite how busy it was.
Very! The department needed a very quick turnaround, so on busy days it was usually around 11/12 hours with a quick 15 mins to pop out for lunch. These hours did not compare to those of everyone else though! It was fine for me, you learn more and everyone does their bit, it usually ended up being quite a laugh.
By the end I was given the same responsibilities as a trainee.
My degree in an arts subject won't be helped, but given my interest in finance this was hugely helpful, and things make a lot more sense when reading the FT now!
The Company
Busy but friendly and approachable.
Not a lot set up for interns, the buddy system is good however. Finding work was something I had to do for myself but it means you get to know people and can't turn down the chance of networking drinks!
None, but I was only there for six weeks so that's understandable.
Subsidised Canteen
No promotions in my department this year, but right now this is no surprise with the state of the City of London in general. People are still feeling optimistic about the future long-term.
The Culture
Yes, but we had to make it ourselves.
London is a bomb!
...It's also great for nightlife though.
One CSR day, that's about it though.
