The Role
Great work, huge variety and most people were a real pleasure to work with. I was in Deloitte's Consulting practice. As a Scholar I worked in Operations, Finance, HR and everywhere in between.
Entering a project half-way through feels daunting at first, but everyone is very emphatic that asking questions is much better than sitting there panicking. Team drinks and dinners helps to encourage a culture of collaboration.
The balance was almost perfect on most of my projects. Managers (and colleagues) give you small pieces to complete. If you prove trustworthy the burden increases. After a week on a new project I would be solely responsible for a major deliverable, tracking tool or client relationship.
This can be very dependant on your project. Some initial projects were a little slow, which was usually due to the project manager providing a place for a Scholar without having scoped out a specific role. The Scholar Team picked up on this and now placements are only provided if there is a specific need for a scholar/SVS intern.
While I wasn't quite running the show, feedback has been that I was one of the pillars holding up the project. It's great to be told that, without you, they probably wouldn't have made it.
I'd say that the experience is much more relevant to a future careers than to any degree studies. It develops time management and interpersonal skills in a way that a degree can't provide.
The Company
In the office it can seem a little dreary. Granted, a free hot chocolate will always improve your day, but it can wear off quickly. Having said that, the opportunity to visit client sites makes up for this by far. Even as a Scholar you are trusted to sit in an executive board meeting, taking notes and being introduced to CEOs and HRDs. I was even fortunate enough to get flown out to New York for three weeks as part of a placement.
As soon as you join you're provided with numerous contacts in case you have a question or some feedback. Everyone always seems to have enough time for you to grab a coffee and figure out some objectives, or whatever is bothering you. Sure, it takes some time to figure out the HR system, but the intern organisation is flawless.
As an intern you're treated like any one of the employees: you can enrol on training courses, join sports clubs, enjoy free subscriptions... You're valued as a potential graduate and even attend the same training as them when you begin.

I recently acquired a graduate placement with Deloitte Consulting.
The Culture
It very much depends on your office location. London scholars enjoy the most social benefits, all being near each other. The Scholar Team do organise several events, but generally you can get involved as much as you like!
It was central London...so pretty steep. Having said that, the occasional team drinks and even more occasional (michelin star) dinners certainly made up for it!
Again, catching a few drinks with your office or team can be great fun. If you're new to the area they will show you the best hangouts.
Deloitte do a lot of sponsoring, encouraging charity events and the such. There are countless sports clubs to join.
