The Role
The internship was very enjoyable. I worked in the Brighton office and as I do not live there, it was a great place to spend my summer. Amex put those of us needing summer accommodation in contact with each other and we shared a house which was great as we didn't feel isolated at all. The internship offered me lots of new opportunities to interact with senior management as well as my peers and the work that I was doing actually made a contribution to a real project.
I felt very valued whilst at Amex, the senior staff that I worked with were very accommodating and I found it very easy to approach them and ask for help if I needed it. I was always made to feel like I was doing a really good job, and was encouraged by my leaders and also my team.
The support from my manager was great- both in terms of the work that I was doing and also in terms of future career goals.
To start with getting to grips with a whole new world was a bit daunting. But I picked it up after a couple of weeks and found myself busy (but never having to stay very late at night!) which was great. If I had a late phonecall with the US one evening, I was allowed to come in at 10 instead of 9 which was really great.
I was given a lot of responsibility for the work that I was doing. What was most important is that it was my responsibility to work out how to get what I needed from who I needed.
The skills were invaluable. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me more perceptive, more able to interact with individuals other than my peers and also developed my presentation, IT and time management skills.
The Company
The atmosphere was very friendly within my team and there were always chocolates/ biscuits being bought in for us all. All my team were really nice to me and always offered me encouragement and help when I needed it.
It was really well organised- there were events weekly for team building with the other interns which involved travelling to London and we participated in treasure hunts, conference calls (where we were given book vouchers), drinks and canapes, and bowling. They were all great fun. Also we were really well supported in our teams with a buddy.
Amex were really good at ensuring that we got everything we needed. Whilst I was only there for 10 weeks, I met other graduates who had alot of training and development.

The Culture
Yes, it was great fun. 4 of us also lived together so it was easy to do things like organise nights out. We always met for lunch and I have made some wonderful friends!
Brighton is an expensive place to live, which is where I chose to be over summer to be closer to the office. However, just outside of Brighton is cheaper.
It was Brighton!
These are the kinds of things you look for yourself, and there is always tonnes going on in Brighton, especially over the summer.
