The Role
It was pretty tough work having to wake up so early on the Cash Trading Desk. The end of the week couldn't ever come sooner!
On one of my rotations, the atmosphere was very tense; jobs weren't very secure and it was every man/woman for themselves. On the other rotation, I felt really comfortable.
Again, depended on my rotation. On my first rotation, everybody was too busy saving their own back to spend time with me. On the other, I was given plenty of attention in the way of training and guidance.
Some days were terrible with no work at all. Other days were terrible with way too much. It was never that I was constantly, consistently busy on a daily basis.
Again, depended on the desk I was on. On my second rotation, I was basically doing half of the work for the team (it was a team of two, and one guy was away most of the time). On the other rotation, which was Cash Equities Trading, without FSA licensing it's of course impossible to do any trading and make money for the desk.
Networking and general office-etiquette was learnt. I also think I developed a more corporate mindset, which is perhaps invaluable.
The Company
First rotation, again, was pretty dull with the job security issue. The second rotation was a bit more up-beat.
Rotation scheme was good, but often found that a lot of time was spent faffing about sorting out IT and logistics.
Lots of training was provided, from Bloomberg, to Reuters, to Excel, and to Nomura's bespoke packages. The pay packet was also fairly large, so a big investment overall.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
It's not a great time to be Nomura employed.
The Culture
Everyone knew everyone, and enjoyed spending time together when possible.
London- standard story of expenses!
Not great right there, but in London, clubs and bars are never too far.
Not much, though did a very good CSR Charity event.
