The Role
I had no idea what I wanted to get out of my placement but I found out that this was it. I got involved ina number of different areas of tunnel ventilation design including surveying, modelling and design. I was also given a lot of freedom to learn a number of programming languages at my own pace which proved to be a great benefit to both the company and myself. I would definately recommend this placement to anyone who is very numerically minded and wants to get a wide range of responsibilities and duties.
Admittedly it took my a while to settle in but once I had I felt very welcome by all the staff in the office and by the time it came to leave I really didn't want to leave. I felt very valued and appreciated whilst at Atkins. They also kept me on longer so I could be a part of the kick-off for a project.
Both technical and general support was always provided when I required it.
During the placement there were periods were work was thin on the ground and other times when there was loads to do. This was because we were a relatively small team bidding on a number of projects. Sometimes projects would all start at similar times.
My level of responsibilty started off very low but by the end I felt that I was given a lot of responsibilty by my superiors being sent on solo survey's and taking charge of a lot of work.
The skills I picked up will probably serve me better after my degree in the work place but I have learnt a lot of time management / resource management skills plus other transferable skills like programming in VB and a much high dexterity with MS office especailly excel.
The Company
Engineering consultancy, it's not gonna be a party is it!? Very quiet office but that did allow me to get on with work easier.
My supervisors obviously thought long and hard about what work I'd be taking on and how they'd like me to develop during the placement. I feel quite lucky to have been hired by them.
The company invested as much as I would have expected them to in sioemone who would only be there for a year. Soemtimes more in the sense that they didn't send me on any training courses but I did have to opportunity to learn a number of skills by myself at my own pace.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
They offered me a job upon leaving and the opportunity to come back in my next summer.
The Culture
Few young people to be honest although this was changing as I left, hopefully if I come back next year there'll be more graduates and interns.
Not cheap but not too bad. It wasn't the centre of London but not up north.
Pffft....
Yes but I wouldn't take them as I have a long distance girlfriend which seems to b taking up a lot of my time!
