The Role
The summer internship has been an extremely enriching experience. I have been exposed to interesting projects that allow me to understand the dynamics of working in groups in an ever-changing and fast paced environment like the one in Bloomberg.
My collegues trusted me in the work I was doing, allocating me a good number of responsabilities. Leveraging on the team was a mean to show how valuable team members were considered. The flat structure in Bloomberg allows strong interaction since day 1 and built the foundation for respect and friendliness.
Scheduled weekly catch-ups with my mentor allowed me to have a comprehensive vision on how I was proceeding towards the goals pre-set in the internship and on the projects. A number of reference contacts are given to you at the beginning of the internship, but it is important that you show independence whenever a difficult problem is posed in front of you.
Working hours were honest. I was working from 8 am until 6/7pm. Sometimes because of overlapping things, I stayed until slightly later than 7. but this has been rare. Bloomberg offers a perfect work-life balance.
A lot of responsabilities were allocated to me. I had a number of clients to follow and make sure that every request from them was handled in the shortest time and of the highest quality.
What I learnt on finance in Bloomberg goes far beyond my course content. Extensive training in provided for you during the internship both on financial notions and on how to use the Bloomberg Terminal. The work I was doing was specific to a given asset class, but I definitely became an expert of it during my time at Bloomberg. Team specific materials helped a lot in the understanding of the financial product and how to approach clients with an "industry insider" language.
The Company
The atmosphere is really friendly. Because of the flat structure, everyone is easily approachable (even senior people) and everyone is willing to help you in any circumstance. I would say it was the right balance between a serious and enjoyable working environement.
The internship program has been well organised. Lunch and Learn series were talks from senior employee ( the CEO came from NY to speak to interns), organized visits to the Bank of England, and the London Metal Stock Exchange were organised, together with volunteering sessions.
A Bloomberg training is provided on how to use the Terminal, "Bloomberg University" is a platform accessible to interns with modules spacing from specific asset classes to how to use LinkedIn or Twitter for professional purposes. A finance training was provided to interns throughout all the internship first eight weeks.
Company Parties/Events
Bloomberg offers a really wide range of professional growth, combining your specific interest. From Global Data it is possible to switch to Sales eventually, to cover an ever changing numbers of countries, clients etc.
The Culture
Friendly environment, a lot of work among fellow interns for a company presentation.
The City of London is an expensive to live and enjoy.
The City of London is quite dead after 10pm. For the Nightlife, it doesn't offer really nighlife places.
As mentioned before, opportunities to do volunteering, visit the Bank of England, London Metal Stock Exchange. Hot tickets are offered if willing to see musicals etc.
