The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my 6 weeks with John Lewis, truly fair and friendly to work for.
Really friendly group, I felt welcomed as part of the team from the outset, couldn't have asked for nicer group of colleagues.
Feedback was constant, I was treated brilliantly, all managers were really helpful, patient and made me feel valued.
Nearly everyday went by in a flash! There was a really good range of different activities for me to experience. Also a good balance between 'shop floor' experience and behind the scenes work.
From the outset I was treated as a potential manager and given responsibility to manage areas of the department as if I was a manager.
Great opportunity to see the practical 'real life' business environment of a large retailer, to compliment and enhance my studies. The whole experience will be invaluable, even if I don't end up working with John Lewis I feel.
The Company
Great rapport between Partners, I looked forward to going in every day. Although there was lots going on, there was an atmosphere of fairness and mutual respect between Partners.
After a few initial administrative hiccups, the actual internship was very well organised. I was given a timetable detailing all of my tasks, so day to day I knew at a glance what I would be up to. Regular communication and feedback helped ensure the experience was effectively organised.
The time devoted to me was amazing, I was never made to feel that I was 'in the way' or taking up other Partners time when they obviously had other jobs to get on with.
Subsidised Canteen
I have been accepted to attend the final stage of interview and whole heartedly hope I will secure a job with John Lewis.
The Culture
As I was the only intern at the time, there wasn't a great chance to socialise, however this was through no fault of John Lewis.
If the you shop around Edinburgh can be fairly reasonably priced as a place to socialise.
Great choice of pubs/clubs nearby for every budget!
Due to the short nature of my internship I didn't have a lot opportunity in this regard, however I believe had I been there longer there would have been more chances to get involved outside of work.
