The Role
The placement was good. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot as well.
I felt rather valued by my immediate colleagues, both as an employee and as a person.
My supervisor was excellent. Whenever I needed help he was always prepared to lend the time but still encouraged me to push myself.
There were some slow periods due to the nature of the work but most days I had enough work to be getting on with without feeling pressured.
I was given a fair amount as the placement went on, important decisions were made based on my work which made it feel valuable.
I believed that the skills I learned will greatly assist me in my studies. Not just the engineering skills but also the transferable skills such as organisation.
The Company
There was quite a lot of fun in the office, banter and conversation. By the end there were even some pranks!
I believe the internship was quite set up, there was usually a steady flow of work and each on ewas more involving than it predecessor.
The company allowed me to attend training days on site to develop my background knowledge of the parts that were being designed. They also gave me a training day to go towards a course offered by YINI.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Car
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Healthcare from home
The company has good opportunities to progress should you work there, some of my peers were offered jobs and sponsorship for the remainder of their course.
The Culture
IN my group of students there was a good scene. Meals and nights out were organised and there was a weekly cinema trip.
It was relatively cheap to live in Gillingham. In terms of living costs you get what you pay for, I didn't pay much rent but the landlord was useless. Nights out are relatively cheap if you know where to go on which night.
The night life in Gillingham is abysmal, there was one club that looked awful. However in the surrounding tows there a lots of bars and clubs you can go to, the only issue is cost of travel.
There are things to do out there, you just have to look. I took up kickboxing and started going to the gym.
