The Role
I was given a role that allowed me freedom in my work meaning I had real responsibilitys and an opportunity to show what I could achieve. The whole programme was deigned to develop my skill set to be successful in any business environment, the training scheme complemented my work and made for a very enjoyable experience.
I worked in a small emerging business department and from day one I was made to feel a valued team member. I had inputs into discussions and decisions right up to the level of the Managing Director of the BU.
I was given a 'buddy' that I could go to with any issues I was experiencing with my work. In reality I had a whole office of 'buddies' who were more than willing to assist.
Due to the nature of the emerging business my work schedule varied considerably. There were weeks when I had very little to do and myself getting on with more mundane tasks, and on the other side there were weeks when the standard working week went from 37.5 hours to 55+
I was given my own projects to lead as well as being a team member on exisitng projects. It gave me a good balance of independent working and team based activity.
The whole experience was designed to improve my skill set and I was given an extensive training scheme on top of my day to day work. This helped me develop specialised knowledge in the engineering industry as well as skills that can be used in any business situation.
The Company
The office atmosphere at times was fantastic. On other days you'd do anything to find another desk to work at. This was very much down to the nature of the contracts that were dealt with in emerging business. If there was a successful tender it was the best place in the business to be. If there were issues with a tender or failed machines, not so much.
From day one I was taken in and given a full company induction. I then had various training courses to develop my skills throughout the year. I also had monthly reviews and qiarterly appraisals to track my progress and development
They invested a lot of time and effort into myself and every other placement student. They look to develop you so that you will come back as a graduate. They invest in you in hope you will choose to re-invest in them.

Future prospects are very good. The majority of graduates at the company had all previously done a placment year there too.
The Culture
Everybody got on with everybody. Definitely made friends for life, amongst the placement students and the permanent members of staff.
Living in Stamford meant that going out could be quite expensive, and rents are not the lowest. However it is a great place to live so you can stomach the higher prices especially when you're earing a very decent placement salary.
The nightlife was pretty poor in terms of a club scene. There are plenty of pubs though!. To be honest despite the limited ONE club in the town the nights could be as good as you made them especially when out with the other placmeent students.
There were plenty of opportunities to be involved in outisde work activities from golf socities to 5-A-Side football.
