The Role
Fantastic enviornment to work in with collaboration between different trading desks from Power, Coal, and Shipping to the Oil desk in sharing ideas for optimising trade positions.
I was initially slightly aprehensive coming onto a trading floor but felt supported by my peers and settled in very quickly. This was able to help me focus on my work and providing as much value to my fellow team members.
Was set clear tasks on a daily basis, and would have regular meetings with the senior traders to go over my work. It was great to feel that my work was appreciated and considered by seniors who clearly are pressured for time.
I have been given plenty of work so that I rarely had a moment where I was not contributing to the team. I thoroughly enjoyed the role, and when not working on explicitly set out tasks would investigate my own trading ideas, and looking at the current positions that the team were trading.
Given that in a trading internship role you will not be able to trade untill you are fully FSA qualified there is clearly the prohibition of any trading, that aside you are full scope to convey your trading ideas and I really felt like they were taken on board by the team.
This experience was invaluable. I have graduated (studying a Bsc in Accounting & Finance at the LSE) and feel that the on the job experience gained has not only pieced together a lot of my academic financial modules studied but personified real life trading scenarios in particular the behavioural nature of the markets.
The Company
At times this was very serious when breaking news relevent to the energy industry was disseminated into the market place, but there were also plenty of times were the team were able to laugh at some of the daily tabloid stories.
Lots of effort was put in to ensuring that we had a project to work on (when we weren't focused on other daily tasks), and regular lunch and learn sessions with senior members of EDF Trading describing their roles in the firms. As the internship group was fairly small I felt that we were truly given a lot of attention by the HR department and I felt highly valued as a team member.
I was given bloomberg anywhere access, and reuters access, as well as an extra 2 monitors to ensure that I was not held back in any shape or form throughout my internship. This really helped ensure that I was able to set up all my analysis in the same way that other junior traders did on a daily basis.

I received a job with EDF Trading working for the Flow Trading team, and am delighted with the chance that this has provided to further my learning and development into a full time junior trader.
The Culture
The office is in Victoria, so not the cheapest of areas but plenty of selection for lunch within a short walking distance.
Working within a 5 minutes walk from famous london theatres, and one stop away from the west end this is truly an ideal location for heading straight on after work into a busy nightlife.
