The Role
A very enjoyable placement as it allowed me to gain valuable experience working in a laboratory, and it gave me an insight in to industrial business projects and career opportunities for the future.
A very friendly and supportive working environment made my placement even more enjoyable.
Every student is assigned a mnetor from another department who offers suppport and guidance throughout the placement. I had regular meetings with my line manager and group manager to discuss project progress and my integration within the team and company.
I had a good balance between lab and desk based work.
Managed and implememted my own project, and had plenty of opportunities to present and discuss my work with colleagues.
Learnt new laboratory skills and techniques which can be appiled to my university project and future PhD opportunities. Also developed my presentation and report writing skills immensely due to the training provided.
The Company
A very fun and friendly working environment.
My project structure and objectives were planned out before i started, so when i joined i could get straight on with it.
I was fortunate enough to attend a Prince2 project management 1 day overview course and internal courses for presentation and report writing skills. I didn't get the chance to attend external courses for communication, leadership, or influencing skills etc

After experiencing working in industry I would like to take the opportunity to experience research in academia, so would like to undertake a PhD in cancer or cardiovascular research.
The Culture
There were seven other students and very sociable work colleagues so we had a great social scene. The company also arranged many social events throughout the year.
Very cheap aaccommodation to rent in the area. Lots to do in the evenings and at the weekend.
The city has two universities so there were plenty of places to go on a night out!
I joined the badminton and basketball teams at work, and also joined a local netball team in the city.
