The Role
I personally enjoyed most aspects; I found the work varied and interesting, colleagues easy to get on with and the large number of undergraduates employed means there are plenty of people in similar positions.
They treated me as any other member of the team and I felt included from day one; a lot of people are used to working alongside undergraduates.
Biannual reviews, assigned a mentor and of course able to talk to the manager at any time.
An ad-hoc job will always have some particularly quiet and some particularly busy days, but as you learn more you can contribute more and therefore have more work to do.
I was trusted to provide high quality work used in many reports and presentations.
Helpful in general professional areas such as time management, email writing, interpersonal skills, but was also able to develop my presentation skills, Excel knowledge, commercial awareness and analytical skills.
The Company
Everyone was friendly; in particular in my role there were no 'secrets' and generally warm. Obviously GM's financial position cast a slight shadow, particularly when results were released.
Vauxhall have been hiring undergraduates for many years and as such had a very structured and clear undergraduate scheme.
I received training specifically regarding presentations and Excel. Obviously there was also on-the-job training to learn the role and opportunities to explore other areas of the business.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Restricted based on headcount from 'higher powers' and the number of undergraduates vs graduates, but usually have some roles - depends what is required.
The Culture
With so many undergraduates, really easy to make friends, lived in halls for the first two weeks so met everyone, organised nights out and social events always had good turnout.
Pretty cheap, but that's just a reflection on the area.
Not great in Luton specifically but surrounded by Milton Keynes, Watford, London etc.
Some departments had undergraduate sports teams, local gyms etc.
