The Role
The internship was a fantastic experience which I thoroughly enjoyed. There was a great variety of work to do, and I had the opportunity of meeting many interesting and helpful people. The 6 weeks passed very quickly and I learnt a great deal from the experience.
I felt very valued by colleagues. A lot of the work was completed in teams at client sites, and so you had the opportunity to get to know your colleagues quite well. Despite being an intern, my colleagues were always happy to help with any questions and genuinely appreciated the help and support that I provided.
Each intern was given a people manager who was responsible for their development and progress throughout the 6 weeks. My people manager was very helpful and we had regularly meetings to catch up on progress and how things were going. He was also quick to help address any concerns or queries I had.
How busy I was varied during the 6 weeks. I worked on different client projects and those with deadlines approaching were quite busy, and hence I was given quite a bit to do. However, on one fairly complicated project, there wasn't much I could help with, and I spent quite a bit of time on online training.
Despite only being an intern, I was given real responsibility and valued by my colleagues. I was tasked with completing a lot of client work (which was checked through by manager) and didn't have any perform any menial tasks.
Throughout the internship I developed many skills that will assist me in my future studies and career. In particular, teamwork skills were greatly improved and I got an insight into corporate culture and the expectations involved. Moreover, if I pursue a future career in Accountancy or in the professional services sector, the training and experiences I gained will certainly help.
The Company
A lot of the time was spent at client sites, which was generally quite fun. We were situated in project rooms in small teams and there was the opportunity to get to know people. It wasn't all about work as well, and the general atmosphere was quite light hearted.
The internship was very well organised. Training days were set up at regular intervals and information on the intern project was given early on. If anyone had any questions about the internship, there were always people ready to help but overall it ran very smoothly.
PwC invested a lot into the training and development of its interns. The first 3 days were spent at a residential retreat with quite intensive training. Moreover, there was also a training day at the midpoint of the internship which helped to develop skills in smaller sessions.
Sports and Social Club
If you perform well on the internship, there is a significant chance of getting a job with the firm. PwC look to hire many of their interns on a full time basis, hence the internship could easily be the start of a career with the firm.
The Culture
There wasn't much organised in terms of social events by the firm. However, within the intern group there were a few nights out organised and there was a decent social scene.
Working in central London meant that the cost of living and socialising was very expensive, including things like transport.
However, the advantage of being in Central London was that the nightlife was very good. There is so much variety and options available in the centre of London.
There were not many opportunites to get involved with much outside of work. However, if you were proactive, you could have joined the various sports teams available.
