The Role
The internship was very enjoyable and provided an invaluable insight into the role of meteorology within the energy trading sector. The structure of the internship enabled me to get a good overview of most roles in energy trading, and working with the meteorologists helped me to understand better the work expected of a forecaster.
I was well welcomed by the team, and was given good advice and encouragement throughout the internship.
The support given to me was good overall, with answers provided to all of my queries and questions. At some points I was left to my own devices, but always felt I could ask for help if I needed it.
I was constantly busy throughout the internship doing various tasks assigned to me.
Within the tasks assigned during the internship, I was given a lot of control with regards to how much detail and analysis was conducted. However, outside of the project, I had very little input into the forecasting side of the placement.
The skills, especially my time management and general forecasting practices, that I gained from this internship have been invaluable to me in my working life after university.
The Company
It was constantly busy and fast paced, with a good atmosphere among the people working around me.
Although a bit uncertain at first with exactly what and how much work was expected to be completed, the internship was well organised overall.
A good Introduction to Commodities course was provided within the first few weeks of the internship which provided a good overview of the trading world. Beyond this, although no specific training was offered, I still felt that the time given to me by EDF Trading was enough to answer most of my needs.
The organisation has done very well in keeping in contact with me after the internship, and I would enjoy having the opportunity to work with them again.
The Culture
The other interns all got on well, and regularly had lunch or went out after work to socialise.
Working in central London meant that general living costs were higher than I was previously used to.
Had a good feel around the area, with plenty of bars and restaurants available.
A few social activities were advertised via the intranet.
