The Role
Work was challenging although a lot of time was spent at a desk, not a lot of hands on engineering.
I was made to feel very welcome. My colleagues were very friendly and were always happy to help me if I needed support.
Excellent support provided. Many channels within the comany as contacts.
I was very busy and my objectives were stretching - although I would not have learnt as much had I not been constantly busy.
As I was working on a Defence project a lot of responsibility was placed upon me. The tasks I was set gave me ownership of a part of a major development project to work on and give my ideas and influence to.
All of the skills - mostly communication and professional attitudes, will stand me in good stead for the future. I had not been previously used to presenting to top people in a worldwide business, although this was something I had to develop quickly.
The Company
A mixture of seriousness and banter. Due to the nature of the tasks in hand it would not have been appropriate to be cracking jokes or shouting across the office.
Despite a slight mix-up by HR regarding which site I would actually be working at (I ended up 20 miles away from my accommodation) the placement in terms of work was well structured. Every intern was given an interim review and a final review to give feedback on their performance and other members of the company in very leading roles were continually interested in your development.
A lot of time and resource was expended on me. The company wish to be as helpful as possible in allowing you to decide whether RR was for you or not and provided help and support all along the journey.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
I am waiting to find out whether I will be recieving an offer from the company for graduate employment.
The Culture
All of the summer interns were recommended to stay in student accommodation in Derby which meant everyone could socialise. The mixture of other students from different disciplines and backgrounds was brilliant, making the experience not only educationally beneficial, but socially beneficial too!
As we had been recommended student accommodation it was fairly cheap.
Derby was hardly Ibiza when it came to the nightlife, however the fact that all of the interns went out together made the experience good as. It's all about the company - not the venue on a night out!
Yes - there were always emails circulating regarding fun days out or organised events within the company. There was also the opportunity to join the gym or go to the RR social club.
