The Role
I enjoyed the internship tremendously. The team I was aligned with were very friendly and there was a very pleasant working environment. I was given responsibility and client exposure throughout this internship which really broadens your horizons.
My work was highly valued by my colleagues and I was performing work similar to many other graduates.
My supervisor did provide guidance and support in terms of connecting me with contacts around the bank, giving me the opportunity to shadow and learn from various different teams around the bank. Performance assessments were also conducted twice through the internship so I had to keep on the ball and ensure I was always exceeding expectations
I was given a wide variety of work to feel sufficiently stretched but did not feel overly burdened in terms of workload.
I was given sufficient responsibility and exposure to feel engaged throughout this internship
My Accounting & Finance background did help in my understanding of Coutts’ investment proposition. However, as Coutts’ offerings are very wide, incorporating banking facilities, financial planning, tax, trusts and estate planning etc, there was a lot of learning on-the-job. Being in a client-facing role, there is also a need to possess and develop your communication, confidence and people skills, which are in their nature difficult to pick up through training or study.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office is very easy going amongst colleagues but very professional when dealing with clients.
As the very first internship of its kind at Coutts, it has a good basic structure to begin with and I believe it will continue to evolve and improve to ensure both the firm and interns get the most out of this programme.
We had a full week of training in our first week and had many insight/speaker sessions throughout the internship. Most of the learning will occur on-the-job and your colleagues are usually very happy to spend time teaching you.
The graduates/interns are given a lot of attention and development opportunities in this firm and hence the future employment prospects are fairly appealing.
The Culture
I had a fair bit of socialising with colleagues and the placement students.
London & the City are always going to be heavy on the wallet but you can expect to be fairly well remunerated.
There have been occasional nights out here but mainly amongst the younger employees in the team so you will have to get involved if you would like to join them.
We did a charity fundraiser, running 15km across London for the Prince’s Trust as well as sports events with RBS. There are many opportunities to play sports with Coutts employees as well.
