The Role
The internship provided a great insight into Portfolio Management and gave an insight into what Fixed Income involved, through shadowing people on different desks and completing a few projects of my own.
They were mostly quite busy, but if I had a question, they would be happy to answer. I was given projects to complete and present back to the team, some information of which may have been useful for them.
A clear plan was written before I began my internship about the projects I would undertake, and the team were happy to answer queries about the work. However, maybe too much emphasis was placed on the projects that let me get on with that, rather than them explaining their work to me in their own words.
Quite busy on projects, and the hours are long (12 hours a day) but had time to have breaks and meet friends for breakfast and lunch and coffees.
I was allowed to get on with my projects at my own pace. Of course I didn't know enough to set my own projects, so I am glad it was organised before hand.
Public speaking and team work skills during the Intern stock picking competition which ran throughout the ten week internship were greatly developed. Communication skills in a professional environment were enhanced from meeting so many people on a daily basis. The work on bonds however is probably not transferrable to my degree, but would be for a job in this area.
The Company
Quite lively with a few bursts of chatter among the desks, but everyone was working hard.
Very well organised. A formal mentor was assigned from a different division which expanded your insight into how BlackRock functions. Great social events were organised by HR. Portfolio Challenge competition among interns was also very well organised.
Good three days of training by external companies and BlackRock speakers.
They take a while to get back to you, but the proportion of conversions is quite high. However, it can depend on the headcount in your division. A lot of emphasis is placed on your manager's feedback.
The Culture
Social scene was good, pub on Fridays and people got lunch together.
London
Good
Volunteer day was great fun which employees get twice a year.
