The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The placement gave me a realistic example of life as a trainee because I did real work...not a single piece of photocopying.
The staff were fantastic, everyone was very helpful and extremely welcoming. I was praised for the work I did and I was given indications for improvement where necessary. I was involved with a lot of different cases and I was treated like a member of the team and not just a vacation scheme student.
My supervisor was always happy to help - I didn't feel afraid to ask if I was unsure. All levels of staff from the secretaries to the partners were approachable
Not too much and not too little - a perfect amount to keep me busy.
I did a research memo for a particularly large client and the advice contained in the memo was passed to the client by a partner. I also drafted a deed of variation and a lease. The quality of supervision is fantastic and you are given as much responsibility as you can handle. The person giving me the task always made sure I understood what I had to do.
All of my other law related work experiences prior to this one were in small law firms or pro bono placements. This placement was my first in a large commercial law firm and it significantly developed my commercial awareness. This is a quality that will be invaluable to my future training contract applications. It has helped me to understand the differences between the high street firms and the large commercial firms.
The Company
Very friendly, team orientated with a relaxed yet professional feel about it.
- IT training - Health and Safety meeting
This would be the perfect job. It is a South West Firm with a high calibre clients, the staff are friendly, the work is very interesting and there are many different departments and the work life balance is perfect.
The Culture
I regularly went for lunch with the other vac scheme students and events were also arranged with the trainees so that you could ask questions and generally get to know people.
I did my placement in Plymouth. The cost of living is generally cheap compared to the rest of the country.
There are many bars, restaurants and night clubs - plenty to keep even the biggest party animal entertained.
