The Role
The placement was really good. The work was interesting, varied and challenging.
I felt that my contribution to the project was valued by my colleagues was valued, and the the knowledge that I gain while working on the project was recognised and my opinions respected.
I was given a personal development plan at the start which laid out a framework for what I needed to do, and had weekly meetings with my manager to check on my progress. I was assigned a supervisor who worked with me for a lot of the time, and was always on hand to answer questions I had.
Occasional time spent waiting for computers to run, but apart from that was kept more than busy enough - and was able to work at my own pace.
All of my work had to be reviewed after I had done it, but that is the same for everyone at the company. I was responsible for making sure my project got done - which was a customer requirement.
Some of the practical computer skills I learnt have come in useful. More importantly, I learnt a lot about programming in a team, and working generally that will be useful in later life.
The Company
There was a very relaxed atmosphere in the office, and everyone was very friendly.
I was given a project to work on for the entire time, and it filled most of my time there.
I was given a personal development plan that was meant to guide the placement and was also assigned a manager and supervisor - the latter of which was supposed to spend about 1 day a week helping me.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
I have been offered an internship for next summer, which will be at the end of my penultimate year of university, and then can apply for graduate job at the end of that.
The Culture
There were only 3 interns in the same office as me, and I didn't live in the same place as them so there wasn't that much socialising. The office went down to the pub every now and again.
I stayed in my university accommodation for the summer, so it cost less than it normally would have - though subsidised housing was available if I had needed it.
Coventry has some fairly studenty areas - though obviously a lot of people were away for the summer.
There was a football match each week, but that was about it - that was mainly due to the size of the office (only around 15 people)
