The Role
I had a great time at Cisco and got introduced to most of the areas they work in. Whilst I might not have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time getting deep hands-on experience I ended up learning a lot about different architectures and their main strength/weaknesses, which suited me very well.
Everyone was really positive about us being around and were more than happy to sit down and share the knowledge from their field of expertise.
Cisco is a company that strongly encourages you to find your own opportunities and things related to existing projects. I felt that we were given great guidance by our supervisor and especially had really good feedback discussions when we started suggesting our own ideas.
Because of the structure of Cisco's financial year, the summer is a very quiet time where projects aren't moving as quickly as usual. However, you can always occupy yourself with reading up on the different projects & solutions that you might be interested in yourself and if you get stuck you've got all the experts around you!
Because of the low intensity during the time, splitting up responsibility too could have made it tougher than it was for one person doing it. However, I did get to host one of the customers alone during testing the last day of my placement.
I regained a significant amount of the technical confidence which had fallen during exam period. I also greatly improved my ability of picking up technical details, understanding architectural overviews and holding & creating presentations. And presentation skills especially are invaluable!
The Company
Cisco was one of the official supporters for London 2012, which meant that the Olympic Games literally were everywhere!
They had several experts coming in and giving presentations on their field of expertise, and also provided material that we could use in our spare time.

The Culture
I spent time in 4 different offices, 2 of them with plenty of alternatives around however with London-prices, and 2 which were in office-complexes, ie fairly far off from general AW-places.
