    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really good intern community. Lots to get involved with, both in and out of work. Was lucky enough to go on, Car Race Days, Product Launches, Golf Days, and to Goodwood Festival of Speed. Along with good team nights out. Was also free to work from the London office a few days a week, and work from home, without arrangement with my manager, as long as I could justify why i was where i was!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone at HP is supportive, open and relaxed environment. The team I worked with understood how I could help and some relyed on me, and gave me opportunities to add value. Also really supportive team PA who ensured everything was ok

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had regular 121's with my manager, who focused on personal development, and building skills needed for after placement. Support was also given from the management level above, with personal development workshops, in research, presentation skills, interview skills, which all lead to a moc graduate assessment centre.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Work comes in peaks, depending on the time in the month or quarter. Some times you can be "snowed under" others times you could go for a coffee break with other interns or colleagues. I was free to choose how i managed my time, as long as work was done in time, and to a good standard there was no problem, no one was constantly looking over my shoulder!

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the start of the placement i was given the core tasks to perform the role and support the team. As i built up trust and a good reputation, I accumulated more responisbilty, so much so that when the CME Marketing Manager position was made redundant, the events management part was absorbed into my role, i was responsible for running several customer events. (And got to go to most of them!!)

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Working in HP Sales, an area i didnt really see myself in, has given me a good incite into this area of business. The personal development training will help when attending future assessment days and interviews, knowing what assessors (at HP, at least) are looking for.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Really good office environment, i was lucky to have my own desk so had the same people around me, so was able to build greater realtions with them, than some that hot desked. Wide age range from fellow interns around to senior managers and PA's all added to the mix and banter. Also a email distribution list between interns always adds excitement to the work day!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Within my team, the placement seemed well set up, as it was learn on the job as it has real responsibility and to get on with it. From an organisational point, HR do one induction day in bristol and thats it, no central training or development follows. This is dependant on your manager to take up.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In the first few months it seemed a bit lacking, however in retrospect this was proably to allow us to settle in. Within HP TSG Sales, we were lucky to have opportunity (Some interns had nothing compariable to this, or as valuable) to take part in a serises of mock grad assessment days, designed to develop presentation, interview, team working, and negosiation skills. Also my manager ensured I had a development plan with goals, and ensure i was achiving these and developing skills for beond the placement.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    Healthcare from home

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • lots of opportunity to go back as a graduate or employee (not on grad scheme) However uncertanty of the number or type of roles avaiable when i come to apply, due to current climate.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Good social committee. Intern Ball, and nights out in Reading. Charity events etc. Within sales, the interns went out in london after work, and had a good social relationship.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Lived in Reading (sort drive away) with other interns, was around £350 pm inc bills, which is comparable to living at uni in loughbrough.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • in bracknell... who knows, never went out there. Reading however up the road, and where I lived is good, its a town with 2 universitys so some good clubs. Also when in london the night life is of course good... just have to make sure you dont leave your laptop behind!!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Hp has a Sports and Social Committee, and the interns also have one, with opportunitys for football, golf, whatever anyone fancies... there is a driving range at the back of the office, ski slope on the way in, and football pitch across the road at 3M...

    4/5
