The Role
It was great to become part of producing output for BBC Radio Cumbria, especially in the sport department.
Largely, I felt like I was appreciated and that they valued my contribution and effort.
They had a real understanding of what I wanted to get out of the placement and equipped me with the training I needed to get on with things myself.
Most days there was a reasonable amount for me to do. When there wasn't, I tried to use my initiative and put forward ideas and carry them out. Some of my most appreciated work came about that way.
I was given a lot of responsibilty for both live and pre-recorded material being aired at the radio station.
The skills and training I received through the BBC Kick-Off scheme have enabled me to continue my links with the BBC and I am now doing several freelance shifts at BBC Scotland / Cumbria.
The Company
There was a good balance between having a laugh and getting on with work.
Very organised - as I said earlier, they knew exactly what I wanted to get out of it and gave me the opportunities I craved.
The BBC invested a lot of time, money and training to ensure my time was worthwhile, fulfilling and a useful stepping stone for the future.
I am already undertaking paid freelance work for the BBC.
The Culture
It existed to a certain degree but I didn't often have time to be part of it due to travelling etc.
Carlisle was a reasonably priced city.
Didn't sample the nightlife.
Yes there were some charity events I could have been involved with but I was unable to.
