The Role
Fitted in very well from the start and was invited to various social events throughout the six weeks, including a Christmas ball the first week.
Whenever I had client work to do I was busy all day. However on the days I wasn't booked to a client I had to ask others for work and didn't always get some. There were online learning programmes to do to fill the time though so I was never twiddling my thumbs.
The work I was doing was the exact same a first year trainee would and often had to interact with the clients.
I am loosely basing my dissertation on things I learned throughout my internship.
The Company
As audit work is often done on the client site, there were times when there were few people n the office and then other days there were quite a few. I was always on site during my time so got to experience the atmosphere there which was slightly more serious has expected but still enjoyable.
There were very few exceptions where I felt colleagues didn't know what to do with me with the exception being the first day when my induction meetings finished faster than expected and the last day when I had finished all my work. The induction weekend we had prior to beginning the internship was a fantastic way to get to know other interns and the firm from the inside.
I felt the company invested a great deal into me, be it through the induction weekend, the competitive wage or the interesting and important work they got me to do. They definitely showed the perks of working with EY.
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
I was lucky enough to be offered a graduate placement which I snapped up as soon asI found out.
The Culture
By the end of my placement I was sharing a flat with three other interns. We all went out at least once a week and have Serena couple since then. The CSR activity we completed throughout definitely brought us closer together. On top of becoming friends with interns in my office, I also got to know others in offices throughout the country well which could prove useful in the future.
I was lucky enough to haves friend with a flat in the area so I got my rent quite cheap. I know the others all managed to get decent accommodation without lowing the budget, but a few had to move once or twice as a result of the fringe. In terms of socialising, Edinburgh has its expensive parts and cheaper student areas so just depends who I was with,if colleagues then nicer places and if interns more studenty.
As I have said I was invited on a number of office nights out ranging from a black tie ball to a causal leaving do. The interns also managed to fit in a fair few nights out along the way also, occasionally on a school night, which I wouldn't recommend until at least the third week. Edinburgh has the prefect balance of nightlife to suit all occasion.
As it was only the six weeks there wasn't really much going on in the time I was there. As I have mentioned there were the nights out and was also told of things which do occur throughout the year through CSR projects such as various sporting events and volunteering.
