The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Lidl. The placement scheme is very well structured and can be tailored to suit you. You are given responsibility right from the beginning and it is good fun working in the fast based retail environment.
I felt that my efforts were well valued and appreciated by colleagues. I worked with some very interesting people and made some great friends throughout the course of the year.
You receive as much support and guidance as you need however, there is the freedom in that if your doing well then extra support/ guidance may not be required. In this case I feel it is better and more satisfying just to be left to it.
I spent the majority of my placement in store doing management training. In this environment there is always a lot to do and there is never a quiet moment. However this makes the day go quickly and it is great to feel that your efforts are contributing to the smooth running of your store.
Something that sets this placement apart from others is the trust and responsibility that can be placed in you. After completing my Store Manager Training I was given the opportunity to run a busy London store for 4 weeks. My responsibilities included ensuring the welfare of the staff, the ordering for the store as well as meeting various targets.
I feel I have benefited a lot from my placement. I have gained experience and matured a lot. My confidence and grown and it was a great opportunity to decide if retail is a sector that I would like to base a career in. I have learnt better how to balance my work and social life. There are a lot of early morning starts during the placement and those nine o'clock lectures really aren't a problem anymore!
The Company
I was more based in a retail environment but the the atmosphere was great. You are working in a small team and it is great to see everyone pulling their weight.
The placement was very well organised. It is very structured and can be tailored to suit you. After your initial training there are three, three month modules which can be based in Sales (store), Warehouse and Property. I chose to spend all my modules in sales which meant I was trained up to Store Manager level.
I feel that the business invested a lot in me which aided my development. I was also very motivated to work as I felt that my work was appreciated. I always had someone I could call if I had a problem and I was always supplied with any resources I needed to help my training

I have enjoyed working for Lidl and will definitely see what graduate positions are available at the time of my graduation.
The Culture
The placement students based across the country so you wouldn't see them everyday. However, there are regular training sessions which include an overnight stay. All the students attend these and they are a great opportunity to socialise and discuss our experiences.
I was based in South London where the cost of living in relatively high. Despite this the salary should be enough to cover your living expenses.
I was based in London and the nightlife was great. There was always lot to do. As your days off are sometimes during the week it is possible to get involved in the student scene in Kingston were there is some great Nightlife. You will be working hard so it's important to get out and enjoy yourself!
This year Lidl organised the "lidlmypics" which was a series of sporting events so there was plenty to get involved with. There are also groups among Head Office and the Warehouse who play football, so you could get involved in that.
