The Role
I did really enjoy my placement - nice people, nice company and it was a very good job too! At times things could get a little repetitive, and I'm not certain that a completely office-based job is for me, but otherwise it was fab!
I still can't believe how friendly and caring and lovely everyone was! I really was treated like family! I was involved in nights out etc right from the word go. My department all went for lunch together nearly every day too which was really nice! Not just socially, but I was involved in everything to do with work too - including planning meetings for the next year when I'd only been there a month. I really was treated like a full-time employee right from the start. Couldn't have asked for nicer work colleagues, not one single person in my department that I did not get on with.
My manager was simply the BEST. She was just absolutley fab - always made time for me, even if that meant staying late because she'd been in meetings all day. Offered as much or as little help as I wanted/needed. Really cared about my personal development too. Loveliest person ever too.
I wouldn't say it was a complete perfect balance - some weeks would be really hectic, with everything needing doing at once, and some weeks qould be quite quiet when I had to beg/borrow work to do (though that was only the minority of times!). It wasn't bad being hectic though as due to the flexitime they run, if you work extra hours, you can take them back at another time!
Tonnes and tonnes of responsibility! Basically got given a budget for various campaigns and it was up to me what I did with it! None of this tea making malarky! Involved with real work right from the word go. Not too much responsibilty that you felt like you were drowning though as there was always support and guidance if you needed it.
I think the "placement experience" as a whole will massively help with my degree, and the skills I gained in the job would obviously help if I went down that career path. I also gained more "admin-y" type skills too, such as organisation, time-management, meeting skills, presentation skills etc.
The Company
Amazing office atmosphere - everyones so friendly! We went for quite a few nights out and leaving do's etc as a team. Everyone got on - there were no rifts and noone was really a "shouter" and there was noone you would really be scared of - no office horror stories! Even if something was done wrong, there was no shouting and telling off, more justa chat about why it happened and how to avoid it happeneing again. We didn't have music blaring etc, but that didn't mean it wasn't a good atmosphere! Plus people brought in cakes and sweets on their birthdays which was awesome! We also had the occasional "buffet! lunch together as a whole department which helped the team spirit.
For my year there were a couple of things that could have been improved on, but we did that for our replacements, so now there isn't really anything that I would say its missing!
I could have gone on absolutely any course I wanted to! All I had to do was tell my manager if there was something that I wanted to do, and I could usually almost certainly do it!

Unfortunately the placements in Loughborough at the moment aren't linked to the grad scheme as it is run in Bracknell, but I was pretty much assured that if you applied for it you would go straight through to the next stage, which is fair enough really! They are also very keen that you stay in touch, and you never know what might pop up!
The Culture
We had the best year ever! The placement students group split a bit this year, but we still went out loads, though I did find that I went out more with the other people in my department as the year went on. During handover period though the placement students tend to go out quite a lot for different people's leaving parties, and we had a BBQ so that the new students could get to know each other and meet all of the old students. A few of them lived together too.
With Loughborough being a student town there is cheap student accomodation and cheap student nights out to take advantage of, and it doesn't seem to quite be far enough south to have a massive price hike on everything!
Loughborough student nightlife is fab! The union is one of the best nights out I'v ever had!
Within work itself, there were a few trips you could go on, and a few clubs you could join, plus they had a fun run with a BBQ and organised some volunteering projects (within work time, so you got time off work to do them!). However you could easily get involved with all of the activities and societies that Loughborough University has to offer (which is a LOT).
