The Role
The internship was very enjoyable. The range of tasks was broad and involving, ranging from company research to client calls and drafting sections of a report. The HR team also went to great lengths to make sure we were happy, organising many social events throughout the internship.
The people I worked with were very communicative and were always willing to give feedback on your work. They were excellent at identifying smaller but meaningful tasks that allowed us to contribute effectively to the projects in hand. They also organised leaving drinks for us at the end of the internship to show their appreciation!
The management team were excellent at offering support and guidance. Where technical knowledge was required for a task, they would give us the relevant material we needed to read and understand in order to complete the task, and they were always available to answer questions and point us in the right direction if we were unsure on how to procede.
I was generally pretty busy, which is exactly what you want from an internship. I had heard stories of there not being much to do, and interns effectively twiddling their thumbs for extended periods of time, but that certainly was not my experience. I had a good level of work which gave me a real sense of achievement at the end of a day, but didn't mean I had to stay until midnight to get it done (I was almost always out of the office by 6pm).
I was given a fair amount of responsibility during the internship. I was tasked with writing certain sections of a report which would ultimately go to the client, and I was responsible for taking notes during client calls, which although sounds a bit dull is actually quite interesting and is critical to the progression of a project.
The skills I gained during the internship will certainly be useful in my future life. The experience of working in a big corporate world highlighted the importance of efficiency and attention to detail in your work, as errors cause delays and cost money.
The Company
The atmosphere was very positive in the office. Everyone is friendly and approachable, and we would frequently socialise outside of the office as well!
The internship was superbly organised. Throughout the whole recruitment process and the placement itself the HR team were always on hand to answer any questions, and all the events went off without a hitch.
Ernst and Young certainly seemed to care about the development of their employees. During the placement my colleagues were only too willing to explain some of the complexities of tax planning, and every week there were group knowledge sessions in which members of the team present a particular topic or item of difficulty to their colleagues.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing indeed and I am lucky enough to have been offered a job!
The Culture
The social scene both with the other interns and with other members of the team I worked in was excellent.
Being London reasonably expensive, but our colleagues knew the cheap bars and were often generous with their own money so it was not too bad. And we were paid as well...
Like the social events there was a good nighlife scene for those who wanted to take part, particularly on a Friday night.
Ernst and Young's corporate social responsibility programme allows employees to take part in volunteering projects. There are also loads of sports and social clubs that you can join within the company.
