The Role
Really enjoyed it. The job is so varied so you never get bored. I learnt a lot about fund management.
Everyone on my team made a massive effort to get to know me and I was always given the chance to say what I thought. We were effectively doing the same job as everyone else.
I was given a first year buddy to guide me through. We built up a good relationship and I felt comfortable asking him any questions. In fact everyone in my team was willing to help me and answer any questions.
There are no daily targets set so you just do as much as you can. I worked roughly 8:30-5:30.
While you are researching a company you (almost) become the expert on it. People on your team turn to you to ask questions and you are expected to give your own opinion about how the company will do in the future.
I went into the internship knowing very little about fund management or financial analysis. I think the skills I learnt will definitely help me in the future. I felt I learnt so much as the team were always willing to answer my questions. We also had an induction week and lunchtime talks.
The Company
t is a very quiet office to work in but that allows you to get your work done efficiently. The office was often compared to a library.
We had an induction week at the beginning and lunchtime talks throughout the internship to understand the job and the company better. I thought the feedback part of the internship could have been more structured.
They took our development very seriously. They hired an accounts consultant to take us through the basics at the beginning of the internship and exposed us to many different investment styles in the lunchtime talks.

Unlike other internships, it is not clear how the internship feeds into a career at Barclays. At the most you can be fast tracked through to the final round of interviews but no one is ever offered a job based on the internship alone.
The Culture
The boys were in one apartment and the girls in another. We all seemed to get along well.
Edinburgh is much cheaper than London!
Our internship was during the Fringe festival so the nightlife was great.
It seemed like the opportunities to get involved were in September, after our internship had finished.
