The Role
I enjoyed the placement because of the people I worked with and the fact that I found an insight into working life interesting, rather than enjoying the actual work I was doing.
I was thanked several times for the work I completed. On some occasions I was sent to specific clients where they needed extra help which made me feel like my time was valued.
Ernst & Young have a very good counsellor and buddy scheme. I felt that there was someone I could talk to about any issue I had. This was one of the best aspects of the placement.
This varied day-to-day. During my last week I felt as if I was at a bit of a loose end for work to do, but for the majority of the rest of the internship I was kept busy.
I was given responsibility but always had someone that would check my work or help me if I was stuck. Therefore I had limited responsibility but I don't think this was necessarily a bad thing as I had no experience in the work I was doing.
The internship taught me a lot about accountancy, which I am planning to go into. I was also a good introduction to working in an office environment and for a big company.
The Company
This depended on the project I was working on. I found that some teams had a really good atmosphere, whereas others weren't so fun.
We had a really good introduction weekend away and a ball after the 6 weeks had finished. We also had an induction day at the start. We had access to our timetable which told us which clients we were booked onto for the duration of our placement.
We were assigned a counsellor who helped us with our development goals. We also had a bit of training in the weekend away at the start and the induction. In general, everyone I worked with were very helpful in training me.
Company Parties/Events
I have taken a job starting 2013.
The Culture
I socialised with my fellow placement students every weekend of the placement. Plus, we all attended the office summer party.
In general, Bristol is not particularly cheap but I was able to stay with a friend so my cost of living was not too high.
Very good night life in Bristol!
We were invited to the events that the company was hosting whilst we were on our placement - for example, the summer party, discounted tickets to the theatre. I also went to a circuits training session run by the company once after work.
