The Role
The pre-registration year was by far the most challenging year of my life but I relished the experience and learnt so many new skills.
Having good colleagues is vital and I felt valued because it was my 3rd placement with the store (although this one lasted for a year). I had built up a strong rapport with all team members.
As a pre-reg student you are provided with a supervisor whom supervises your work and mine conducted regular meetings to help me stay on track with my learning.
As the year went on the number of patients I was testing gradually increased and I found myself busy everyday. On many occasions, lunch had to be cut short.
I was generally given more responsibility towards the end of the placement as I was nearer qualification but I was encouraged to make decisions and use my clinical judgement by my supervisor.
The different cases of pathology and how to deal with them was invaluable learning, as was developing my own style of testing.
The Company
The atmosphere was generally very positive and the support staff were very helpful.
The year was very well organised with training days and exams being communicated promptly.
The company provided me with some equipment and invested in my training and exams.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
At the end of the placement, they review your performance and decide as to whether to employ you as a newly qualified optometrist.
The Culture
The students regularly went on courses and there was a good social scene when we were together.
London was expensive and as I lived in Central London, rental costs were a significant proportion of my outgoings.
The nightlife was good but due to the nature of the placement, I was unable to fully experience this.
The store regularly had social events for all staff members which I took part in.
