The Role
The internship was both enjoyable and rewarding. Often with internships, it is difficult to find a placement that balances responsibility and experience to make for an enjoyable summer, but the scheme and people involved made the internship very enjoyable.
I definitely felt valued by the team I was working with. If you are willing to get stuck in and help out where you can then your colleagues will reciprocate. At the end of the day the experience is largely what you make it and if you value the experience the team will value you!
The scheme is there to give you a framework within which to learn about Coutts, my manager encouraged me to find insight sessions and other work and was really supportive in all the work I did.
This might mirror some previous sections, but whenever I had finished a job or found myself waiting on a reply, I just asked around. For this reason I was pretty much always busy with my project, general office tasks or fundraising so all in all quite a hectic ten weeks!
I was fortunate to be given a lot of responsibility through my personal project and general team tasks. Getting things done quickly and to a high standard will open doors for more important tasks and the opportunity to take ownership of a project. I never felt like I was just around to help out with the day-to-day tasks and provide general team support which can sometimes be a problem in internships
The key skills required for the job were time management, people skills and communication, all over which assist in any degree and study choice so I’d have to say that the training was very helpful!
The Company
The office was a very motivating and rewarding environment to be in. The team was diverse in personality and worked extremely well which meant that there was scarcely a moment without a lot of work!
The internship was the first of its kind, the overall structure was great. There were networking and developmental sessions throughout the ten weeks and the feedback and communication between the management team and the placement managers seemed to make clear what the end goals were.
I think it’s difficult to gauge how much the company invested in us given the short period of time that we were with the company. The internship started off with a week’s worth of training and there were similar developmental opportunities available to us through the scheme including business area insights. Overall I would say that there was a great deal of investment given the scope of the programme.

Future prospects are strong within Coutts although I would advise doing some research on the organisation to best understand the direction that the company is taking at the moment. For myself, I think that the graduate programme is certainly geared towards development and if I was given a place on the scheme, I would definitely take it knowing how much graduates and young talent is valued.
The Culture
Most social events require at least some organisation by the employees or interns but there were networking events and speaker events internally which often led to socialising afterwards.
Central London is expensive but great for a night out.

Opportunities will grow the longer you are with the company but over our experience there seemed to be a fair few chances for external activities and leagues within the company.
