The Role
I did not enjoy this placement for many reasons. Firstly I was expected to [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]lie about who I was (such as pretending to be a student) to::: get the email of a 'contact' from an organisation so we could spam them with emails. I disliked the sales environment which I found unsociable and stressful. If someone made a mistake they were humiliated in front of whole office. Also, you were expected to work over your lunch break and got no breaks. This in combination with long hours (8-5) which is long for a student who was there on a 'learning' experience.
Not sure if I was valued as such but the people I worked with were nice to me.
Guidance by my supervisor was good but the overall guidance was not very good. In fact, my manager (my supervisors manager) never spoke to me which I found a bit odd.
I was very busy and a lot was expected from me. It was considered a job not a learning experience. I always left work feeling very stressed due to the amount of work they piled on me.
Was given some responsibilities but too many for the amount of pay I received (which was just over minimum wage) and that I was a student on a learning placement.
The only skill I learned was how to call [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] people [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]
The Company
It was a very high pressure, full on work place. For that reason, there was a lot of tension and stress around. It was rare for the atmosphere to relax, only late on a Friday when everyone wanted to go home for the weekend. additionally, they try to mold you to their way of thinking and claiming they are helping people; in fact this is all rubbish and they only care about making the sales. What the candidates want is almost ignored.
My placement was poorly organised from start to finish and before I started. When i received my placement offer and contract the start date was in August 13th. After hearing nothing I called the office I was due to be working in to ask when they wanted me to start and they said I was starting the week later and had no idea I was contracted to start on the 13th. The implications of this were that I was docked pay later on (a weeks wages) due to their mistake. Another key point is that when my computer broke and I had to order a new one, the new computer never came! So I had to take/borrow other peoples computers which was very annoying. These points and the total lack of communication within the company are why it is poorly organised.
I was given a few training days in London which were nice but not at all relevant for my position as a resourcer. The database training was good (onetouch) but the rest were specifically designed for the consultants.
I resigned after 3 months of this placement, that is how bad I found it. I not only have been put off working for hays and every other recruitment firm, but most of the business world (private sector).
The Culture
There was no social scene, I was the only placement student and was the youngest in the office by far.
I lived at home so this was fine.
Nightlife is fine, lots of pubs etc.
The only activity outside of work was football which I took part in. Though I found this a bit sexist as there was no activities outside work for the women in the office.
