The Role
Enjoyed it a lot for the social side of it! Work was mediocre - interesting at times, but a little dull in general. Its a mixed bag really - the organization is so big that it really depends WHERE and WHO you end up working with.
Some individuals took me under their wings and really taught me a lot! Some others didn't really seem to care that there was an intern in their department.
My direct manager gave me limited support and seemed a little distant - but another manager took me under his wing and became my unofficial 'mentor'; very grateful for the latter.
Definitely picked up some soft skills (communication etc) during my time there - and the insight into how the business worked was first class!
The Company
Friendly, open.
From Day 1, it comes down to your manager and how much initiative they take to train you/give you work. etc. Limited/no contact with HR once you start working. There are performance reviews, a mid-term review - but it can all be a bit superficial if your manager doesn't care.
A lot. There's a lot to learn - and you can learn as much as you're willing to put in!
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
I didn't apply to return for the graduate scheme. However, if you do reasonably well and don't cock-up you should deft get a job with them!
The Culture
Amazing! All the interns stay in one of the University of Derby for 10 weeks, was a bit like summer camp/freshers' all over again! Got along great with my hall mates - had cook-outs, walks in the Peak District, cycling trips, drinks, boardgame/movie nights etc... The nightlife in Derby is also surprisingly good! lots of very very good clubs to check out.
Accommodation in halls is about £70/week, it's subsidized by the allowance you're giving in. Definitely stay in halls - otherwise, you'll deft be missing out on part of the exp!
Haha haven't I answered this?
Definitely! Work hours are 8am-4pm. Use your time to organize trips/outings and you won't be bored!
