The Role
Very enjoyable placement job was important to the success of a [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] project!
A lot of people say interns are not treated well at any company. However I found that if I proved myself to be serious about the job with a professional attitude then people would come around to me and would eventually be coming back to me for my ideas/recommendations on relevant issues.
I feel I was very lucky having a very understanding manager. Every 3 months I had a review of my progress/what I wanted to be working on and my manager always found time eventually, although don't expect them to come running every time you hit a problem - they are very busy people! All managers I met were willing to talk about my future options and give advice.
I had large pieces of work to be getting on with always with longer term deadlines. Inbetween these I had many many short projects from people all over the engineering business involved on the project.
My work affected decisions on a company level, and in some cases international airframers were interested in my work and my data influenced negotiations with them. I was allowed to present my findings within the company, however my manager thought I was not quite ready to present 'cross company' which I was happy with. I was entirely responsible for my own work and hitting deadlines as there was no else able to pick up my work if I did not succeed.
I am about to go back to uni. I feel the technical knowledge I picked up was extensive and will help me at uni. I am really taking away an amazing array of interpersonal skills, particularly in the way I communicate with people who are my seniors. One thing I found hard when I started was approaching senior figures asking them to do more work; however if done the right way this is not hard as long as you are not asking them to do unnecessary work!
The Company
Within the team the atmosphere was very good. However, across a large open office everyone has to try to keep the volume levels down as people are trying to work. Good socials organized in my team though!
It was not all planned out when I started. I had work planned out for me when I arrived which would keep me busy for about 3 months. As new issues came up, my manager and I would extend my plans for work into the future which worked very well. I was working right up until the last day.
I was put on relevant courses for my job, the highlight being a 3 hour session every week for 3 months on jet engine performance engineering.

It can be an exciting place to work if you make it that way. Some people are content to bumble along but I think there are good opportunities to pursue here.
The Culture
It was ok, but many interns were away at weekends on holidays, visiting girlfriends etc. Its what you and your fellow interns make of it.
We managed to get a massive house for £45 a week, but I think we were lucky. Night out in Derby is normally quite cheap. Zanzibar has all drinks 99p on Friday!
Its not Ibiza but in general theres some really cool bars, but not any epic clubs. I recommend the live nights at Ryans bar in Derby city centre. Google it - they are always a laugh.
As many clubs as there at uni.
