The Role
I only managed one day here! It completely put me off doing another internship ever again! Even if I was paid to work at this company, I would not work for Vivienne Westwood. I was a passionate customer before, but I will never buy her products now. It seemed a very unhappy office, the atmosphere was miserable and although I met a couple of nice people in other departments, it was just a very demotivating experience.
I was referred to as 'she' for the duration of the day by my manager. I was left standing in reception for half an hour at the beginning of the day because no-one could be bothered to come downstairs to collect me. I was supposed to work till 4pm but ended up working till half 6 and when I started putting my coat on to leave at this point, my manager and colleagues seemed put out (making a couple of nasty comments). My lunch break was less than 5 minutes long which I ate at my desk. As an unpaid role I didn't expect to be working such long hours alongside being treated with such contempt.
I was given many tasks which I had no knowledge or experience of how to do (sewing, using machinery and other practical tasks). This would be fine if the internship was a practical role or my colleagues had given me a little guidance or help, but when I made a couple of mistakes they were very annoyed and swore many times which made me feel quite uncomfortable.
This was the only good thing about the internship, I was given lots of tasks.
Considering it was my first day, I was given a fair amount of responsibility.
The Company
The atmosphere was just awful. The workers were rude to one another. Lots of swearing and bickering. It was just a horrible place to be.
There was no structure to it at all. The internship is in no way there to benefit the intern unfortunately. The department is obviously understaffed.
Not appealing at all! I would never want to work for Vivienne Westwood.
The Culture
The office is in the middle of nowhere! Although its by the Albert Bridge, there are no nearby cafes or anything, just lots of offices. I think the nearest place to walk to would be the Kings Road which is about a 20 minute walk.
