The Role
It was great - I got exposure to two very different areas of law, and a number of types of work within those areas. People were exceptionally friendly!
Everyone I worked with was extremely friendly and helpful, and treated me as a member of the team, despite me only being in each group for 2 weeks.
Supervisors were generally really good at checking in to see how I was going in terms of work and settling in. Management was very responsive to any requests or questions, as well as actively checking in with me.
The amount of work varied, and while there were times when I didn't have much work to do, I usually had just the right amount, given that I was also wanting to be able to leave on time to go and see the city!
The responsibility was roughly what I would expect of a vacation scheme - nothing too intimidating, but it never felt like they were giving me fake or busy work - they were all tasks that needed to be done.
I think what was particularly valuable was the opportunity to talk to a number of different lawyers from different areas of law, so that I could keep thinking about and developing my own ideas about my career. As well as that, it's always good to get experience working in a firm and seeing how the firm conducts its business.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly.
It all went pretty smoothly, and included a couple days of induction to get you used to the place. Management was always a phone call away.
I had two days of induction, as well as the opportunity to attend a few team meetings throughout my placement, which was a good way to see how particular practice groups worked within the firm.
Subsidised Canteen
International Travel
Company Parties/Events
To qualify this one - I already have a job lined up with the organisation in their Sydney office, and this was a placement to experience the London office.
The Culture
I was the only person doing my particular program, so there wasn't really that group structure. Not much of a social scene amongst colleagues, but there were a couple events.
It was fine, and made much more reasonable by the subsidised canteen.
A few pubs.
I'm sure there were, but I was only here for a month, so I didn't really look into it.
