The Role
Large number of interns so great social aspect. Huge company with plenty of experience opportunities.
Some projects made me feel a real asset to the team and I received plenty of positive comments on my contribution. One or two instances where I felt my lack of experience put me on the back foot on some projects, though my colleagues were not at fault.
I had 2 very encouraging line managers who offered me endless support as and when I needed it, and were equally happy for me to work individually on projects that I felt more comfortable with. The extended sales teams also did not hesitate to help and get me involved wherever possible. The sales executive also took me under his wing and made sure I was well looked after.
There were particular days of the week where I would find myself inundated with work and struggled to stay ahead. Equally, there would be days, particularly around the quiet stages of the sales quarter where I would find myself without enough to do.
I started off working on internal projects which bared little responsibility though, as the role progressed I took on more work managing key areas of the sales process, writing client proposals and even represented IBM at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships
The role gave me a vital insight into the industry and the environment. I'd recommend to anybody looking for industrial experience.
The Company
Hotdesk area meant everybody had the freedom to move and work wherever. Very relaxed atmosphere and new faces every week.
IBM pride themselves on the efficiency and organisation of their placement scheme and spend a lot of time and resources making sure we are well looked after. There are industry presentations, feedback sessions, appointed intern development teams etc
I was given access to training programs and funded for business where applicable, though I think my role was very much what I made it and my enjoyment came from what I was able to offer my team.

I was very happy with my performance at IBM. I received 100% feedback score from my managers and received many positive comments from managers and peers alike including words in writing such as "I would hire him tomorrow" and was described by another as "a star in our midst". I was also in the top 3% of interns who qualified for the IBM Wimbledon Representative role. One of my executives recommended my CRM work and I understand this has now been adopted as best practice in Europe. Sadly, IBM's graduate hiring policies didn't take any of my performance into consideration and I didn't meet the quota set by their IPAT test for re-entry into the graduate program. While this means my focus has since turned elsewhere, I'm sad that my time working with such brilliant people is now over.
The Culture
As mentioned previously, there were somewhere in the region of 300 placement students, most of which were based in South Bank or Bedfont so the social scene was very lively. There were also corporate staff parties at Christmas etc that provided a great place to meet new faces away from the office.
It's London, you pay the price for it, but the IBM internship is one of the better paid ones. Plus if you are based in London you get a £3k bonus.
I lived in Kingston, where the local university provided many good nights out during the week and at the weekends. Also being a commutable distant to central London and Clapham was a bonus for the nightlife
Again, it all happens in the capital.
