About You
All the staff and fellow vacation scheme students were extremely friendly; Human Resources provided research tasks to undertake during quiet periods so there was always something to do.
Although work in departments I was sat in was not always readily available, staff were always appreciative of any efforts I did make and were happy and supportive of my presence.
Daily talks from staff in different practice areas would provide useful information on both applying to the firm and starting a legal career in genereal. Staff across the firm were always happy to give advice and speak honestly about life at Stephenson Harwood.
Many of the skills exercised within the two weeks I had already developed to some extent, but you can never have enough practice. Getting a feel of working within a mid-sized City law is an invaluable experience within itself.
The Company
Human resources and trainees had the scheme running like a slick, well-oiled machine.
A group-exercise based workshop and brief library training session amounted to any development and training opportunities provided by the firm.
Very good insight. Honest accounts from the majority of staff opened our eyes to the good, the bad and the ugly contained within the firm.
Recieved a bit of managment spiel from the CEO and Graduate Recruitment Partner of the the firm, which were useful in viewing the company culture.
Had already decided on a career within a City law firm before scheme had no significant impact in this respect.
Everything Else
Reasonable salary in comparison to market rates.
Everyday there were departmental talks from junior/mid-tier associates, while every placement student was assigned a trainee "buddy" within their department and supervisor (either associate or in some rare instances a partner) which provided ample networking opportunities.
Mostly structured talks, so group "Q&A" method was the predominate fashion. Also drinks were held one night after work (paid by the firm) at a seedy bar near to the office with trainees which were fun and relaxed. After the assessment day, social with trainees was held in the evening (meal and bowling) which was very good as well. Would have been nice to have a proper sit down meal during lunch with more senior staff as well.
Fleetingly mentioned in passing by some trainees. No great focus on highlighting such opportunties; of course if such things float your boat, if you enquired I am sure you would have acquired such information.
Depends on the friend.
