About You
The insight was certainly enjoyable overall, it combined an experience of 'real life' work and integration into a department as well still being enjoyable and very friendly.
Work you were given would be of use to at least someone, even if proof reading for example. It does depend on departments and the amount of work available also as to whether you can make a real contribution during your week.
The supervisors wer always keen to assist or you were able to consult with your trainee 'buddies'. HR were also informative when required.
Again, it depends on the department as to the tasks you complete, but still it is a good insight into the type of work that you will do in your training contract: proof reading, taking minutes, redrafting documents and researching. Perhaps less useful for degree purposes, but good practical experience.
The Company
Well structured; there were talks from each departments in the mornings of each day, along with further workshops on occasioanl days. Drinks and a bolwing night were also organised along with lunches so the students felt involved and had a clear idea of what was happening.
Friendly and open, trainees and associates were more than wiling to talk about their expereinces and to help out with work.
You were given a fair few informative documents, which were useful. I felt the talks were also useful and helped to build your knowledge. Perhaps you don't get the level of foucs given by other firms, but still I felt that I had developed during thetwo weeks.
I was often doing work similar if not exactly the same to that of trainees, and while some of it may have been a bit tedious it was still reflective of trainee work rather than being bits of work that are just meant for vacation scheme students but that have little relation to the work you might be doing in the future.
A lot, you were able to become part of the firm for 2 weeks and that really is the best way to judge how it might be like working there for 2 years +.
Also very useful - gained a general understanding of working at a law firm and in particular one of SH's size and scope.
Everything Else
Pay was of £260 per week.
Yes, regular talks, lunches and drinks events were offered in which a range of people from trainees up to the CEO attended.
These events were good, with generally good attendance and involvement from all levels of the firm. The social events were well provided for, with drinks one week then bowling on the penultimate day.
Yes - pro bono activities, alongise football, cricket and netball teams. Socials also.
Yes, I felt it was both enjoyable and informative. As mentioned before, the regular talks were of great help for understanding SH but also generally applicable to other commercial law firms.
