The Role
PLEASE NOTE: This review was for a placement at General Motors prior to the amalgamation of Vauxhall and General Motors (The RateMyPlacement Team) Great levels of responsibilities, really feel as though you are part of the team. Given a range of duties to keep you on your toes.
When preparing quotations for example, I really felt as though I was pivotal to the quaotation being completed. Did feel very welcomed in the team.
Unfortunately my management during my placement was insufficient. Did not really have any feedback at all, apart from at the end when I gained 100% on everything. Would have preferred more guidance and support on regular intervals.
I believe I had nearly the perfect balance, as I had many different roles to complete. If anything I could maybe have been pushed a little bit more but on the whole, good.
I had a ggreat level of responsibility. Running projects on my own and providing alternatives to management. Preparation of quotations was an aspect of the job I thrived on as it gave me that high level of responsibility.
I have gained valuable business experience. However with marketing as my main route, I believe this placement had no-where near enough marketing for me. However I have learnt a lot and will take a lot with me to my final year.
The Company
Office was dull. Never really any fun, just poor jokes from old men! I was the only 20year old. Plus was a male-dominated environment. More fun would definitely have helped the placement.
I believe the actual placement was set up relatively well. As it has been running for some time I believe there is a very good structure in place.
As it is an engineering company, I was the only business studies undergraduate. Therefore I was not really cost-effective for them to invest in my time. I was not really personally trained and developed. We had mentoring sessions once a month that helped our personal learnings.
For me, working at MIllbrook Proving Ground was a years placement and that is all it will be. However I would consider working for their parents- General Motors in Luton.
The Culture
At Millbrook there was not. However I decided to live with the guys who worked at Griffin House in Luton, therefore the social scene was brilliant! Always people around and up for a night out and meeting up etc. Went on holiday with some of the people too so was definitely worth-while.
£330 a month was pricey to live in Luton- it is a very rough area. However nights out tended to be relatively cheap which was a bonus.
As there were a lot of students on placement at general motors it meant that the nightlife made the placement fun! Luton was poor for a nigh out, but had Milton Keynes, Watford, St Albans and Hitchin close-by.
Many with non-Millbrook employees!
