About You
Really enjoyable experience. Very hands on and exposed to all aspects of the work. Given real tasks and always asked for opinion about matters. Offered many opportunities to partake in work and lots of social events to get to know everyone.
From day 1 I felt welcome wherever I went. The people in the department learnt our names very quickly and I was always invited to lunch or drinks with the trainees. People were more than willing to stop and share their thoughts and experiences with you.
Loads. Qestion never went unanswered and all tasks were full explained and often backed up with written instructions via email. My work always received feedback or was edited if it was slightly lacking in some area.
As i intend to be a lawyer, the skills and information is invaluable. From day-to-day skills to the terminology of a deal - everything I learnt was incredibly useful and will assist me in my legal career. Moreover i was often doing trainee work so I gained a realy sample of how it will be in the future
The Company
We were given a preference sheet of 10 departments and were offered 2 of them to spend a week in each. Whilst there, the work varied depending on the types of deals the lawyer was involved in. Most of the socials during the evening were aimed at the first week but we visited the Paris office during our second week which was incredible.
The atmosphere was really friendly most of the time, but you did have to remember that the firm is a place of work so whilst you were at your desk or in your supervisor's room it was necessary to respect that they were working hard.
The firm spent a lot of time getting to know us as people. From the socials, to the networking lunches we developed skills in how to communicate with trainees and partners. My skills in multi-tasking and being able to take instructions and deliver results improved.
I gained a very strong insight into a full time role with the firm. From the working hours to the type of work and the interaction between different lawyers and different departments I gained a very clear understanding of how the firm operates both nationally and internationally
Amazing. The culture is genuinely so friendly and personal. Everyone wanted to chat and offered to help with any queries etc. From networking with partners to future summer vacation students, the firm has a very personal feel and does treat everyone as an individual
The overall experience was invaluable to solidifying my future career path. i now have concrete experience to rely on and base my aspirations to be a lawyer on. The work varies in complexity and interest but each day is dynamic and different and that is the kind of profession I would like to join.
Everything Else
We were paid competitve rates for the 2 weeks which was so good as it really helped with my travel expenses. Moreover, the entire trip to Paris was paid for including the 3 course meal and drinks
Yes lots of opportunities and you were never discouraged from contacting anyone in the firm if your interests lay elsewhere. From senior partners, to associates, to trainees and other vacation students there were endless opportunities to meet and socialise within the firm
Brilliant. There were so many. We went for drinks on the first night, followed by a bowling evening and dinner later in the week. We also went on a day trip to Paris which was so fun and such an experience to observe another international office. Networking often occurred at lunch time events too and trainees were always happy to grab a coffee and chat about law or their role in the firm
The firm has several sports teams to get involved with and i know that any vacation students that could play football were offered the chance to represent Mayer Brown in a friendly one week night.
Totally. It was a great two weeks. Quite intense and packed full of opportunities. I gained a really strong insight into the legal profession at an international law firm and met some really lovely people. Moreover the social evenings and trip to Paris was such an amazing opportunity and really great to have been able to take part in
