    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was fun once I'd settled in.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • When they were busy, it was clear they did not want me to pester them, but this was understandable. When it was not busy, everyone was very helpful.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was very helpful.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Some days I was very busy, but most of the time I was not that busy and would have time to read the research pieces.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was not given a great deal of responsibility because much of what the team did involved client facing. I was not allowed to quote prices to clients, since this requires FSAs, and I couldn't be trusted to talk to clients because hedge fund clients are rather impatient and like speaking to experienced sales people with market knowledge, which I obviously lacked.

    2/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Not particularly relevant for my degree, but the knowledge I gained was excellent in terms of my future career.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Summer is a quiet time of year. When it was quiet, the atmosphere was quite dull, when it wasn't, things were more interesting.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • HR had done a great job of organising events/meetings/feedback etc. but my line manager and team seemed a little underprepared.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Unless people were very busy, they were always willing to help. We were also given online training courses which were optional, but recommended.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They have offered me a job conditional on a 2.1.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, we often went for drinks after work and then gathered a larger group to go out on weekends.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Canary Wharf is not cheap - it is in London! But not exorbitant.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Canary Wharf itself has very little nightlife - the bars and pubs are quite nice, but for proper going out, you have to go to central

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes - a inter-bank touch rugby contest, a day in the community doing charity work (I went to Southend and helped look after kids on a day out).

    4/5
