About You
Great insight week - developed good network of people at the bank, but also importantly with the other insight students.
Difficult to fully guage due to nature of insight week. But definite acknowledgement that we were the future generation of analysts and so were very important to bank. Large amount of resources put into providing us with good lunch and a three course closing dinner. Effort had also clearly been made in planning out the entire week's activities.
During interactive activities we had employees sitting at our table and helping us through the activities, ensuring we actually learnt what was trying to be taught. Good example was M&A case study, where DCF model was explained by presenter but also by our mentor at the table as we were actually doing the exercise.
By far the best quality of the insight week. When I look back at what I knew and understood before, its hard to imagine that that we only a week ago. Developed strong technical knowledge of banking but also good general understanding of how to progress your career and develop a strong neetwork.
The Company
Very structured. Timetable given to us at the beginning of the week outlining exactly what we would be doing every minute of every day. Reasonable amount of breaks were given but also got a lot covered.
Other insight week students were really friendly. Developed a strong connection as a group, especially given that those given accommodation were all together. Particularly liked the fact that time was actually given to talk to other insight week students - not every lunch or break involved networking with employees which is actually vital for creating a good atmosphere among the students.
Felt like BoAML was not just providing us an insight into their business, but also trying to educate us and prepare us so that we come back as interns with a good foundation of knowledge. We were seen not just as students, but as potential future employees.
Very helpful - presentations given on all parts of the business -from tech and compliance to trading and advisory. Emphasis put on explaining what a 'typical day' was like and employees were honest and helpful about the nature of different roles.
Specific presentations given on company culture. This could also be seen as a common theme running through all the presentations throughout the week. While there are the standard similarities which every banks expresses (it's all about the client etc.) the subtle differences were also told which is the key to really understanding the company culture.
Helped to make my desire for a career in banking even stronger.
Everything Else
Reimbursed for travel expenses. Not for food though (kitchens provided at accommodation but there really wasn't enough time to cook). In my opinion would have been better to reimburse £X for dinner each evening and provide accommodation without kitchen facilities.
Plenty of networking events. Importantly there was a good variety of types - e.g. informal lunches, work shadowing, more formal 3-course dinner.
Good food was provided. Although I didn't do it, work shadowing with the markets desks was 1-on-1 which is awesome.
Told about sports teams/company participation in sporting events (e.g. triathlons). Also large amount of work done with art museums and charities - employee participation is encouraged and rewarded.
Without a doubt - great for absolutely anyone. Whether you're certain you want to work in banking and want some good inside experience or you simply want to know more about banking to figure out if its for you then I would definitely recommend this. Wide variety of universities, courses and nationalities.
