The Role
Besides the job being very motivating, challenging and at the same time diverse, the colleagues played the most important role in my overall judgement. When you work with the same people nearly 12 hours a day you have to like your colleagues or else you'll drop the job very soon. I have never found a better working environment in my whole life.
At the beginning you are always put to the test. People don't know you and need to understand how much you're really worth. After a few good project deliveries my colleagues understood how much value I could really add to the team and they started to treat me like one of them. They started to involve me in very interesting projects and relied on me on a lot of things.
I was quite independent since the very beginning as I already knew what the job consisted in, however, whenever I had any doubt and need assistance my colleagues were always there ready to give me a hand and making sure I knew exactly what I was expected to do.
I worked from 8:30 until 19:30, which is very reasonable working hours
Since I had already had some previous experience with this job, I was given quite high responsibilities. As I said, my colleagues would rely on me for several things.
I personally graduated from my MSc in Finance while doing the summer internship, however I can say that this kind of experience always adds value to you, no matter what step you are at in your life.
The Company
Very desirable!! Every once in a while people would crack a joke or come to your desk for a break and you would always end up in laughs! It's fundamental that you like your colleagues and get along with them, if you're on their same wave length you work better!
HR did a fenomenal job on this. Besides the first week training that was common for all the interns, we had continuous training more specific to our department. They also organized a speaker series every Tuesday afternoon for all the interns, volunteering day and lots of funny activities that you definitely want to take part to (touch rugby tournament, dragon boat racing, dinner on a boat on the river Thames etc..)
When you are there you can have all the trainings you wish because Barclays treats you like a full time employee even if you're just a summer intern. In this sense you can participate to any sort of training, both specific or not to your immediate department. There's plenty of choice and that's the beauty of it.

After the acquisition of Lehman, things have changed considerably. No that it's among the 3 top investment banks in Europe and USA, Barclays aims at good rankings also in Asia. A new, fresh and young wave of talents is sought after to reach this objective, therefore great opportunities are offered throughout the firm.
The Culture
I can say that in 10 weeks we went out for drinks 3 times with my team and many more with the other interns. There's definitely a lot of opportunities for social networking.
Canary Wharf is full of bankers and it'd be fool to keep low prices like it could be in some areas of London. I didn't personally live in Canary Wharf, I just went out for drinks and had a few meals there.
It's plenty of bars and restaurants full of people like you that get out of job and want to relax in front of a pint or a nice glass of wine. You won't get bored!!
Community day was compulsory for all the summer interns. If you wanted you also had the chance to join clubs in the firm and do extra activities. There's plenty of these things if you're interested.
