About You
There were varied activities and talks held during the day as well as having the opportunity to meet trainees and the recruitment group. It did not feel as though anything was dragged out and every one put in the effort to get the most out of what they were doing as well.
I did feel the day was about trying to help and improve your skills working towards the goal of getting interviews and placements. You were given similar exercises as you would when going to assessment days and you were given tips on writing applications as well.
In the group exercises the trainees came round and spoke to us to ensure we understood what was going on. They also gave us the choice of letting us get on or offering their help if you wanted. We were given a talk on applications to firms. I find that these talks can be quite general but there were one or two bits which I found useful, in particular going through applications they had received in the past and trying to improve it.
I believe this will be very helpful when attending formal assessment days. I will now have a clearer idea of what to expect and as a result should feel a little less anxious.
The Company
There was a schedule for the day and we followed this. I think it was well structured starting off with a talk about the firm from the partner and then small group chats with current trainees to find out in more detail about the firm. It was a good way to introduce you to the firm and get the answers to any questions you wanted answered.
The other people who had been invited were all very friendly, as were the trainees that we met. Despite this you were still aware you were in a place where the employees are focused and hard working. All in all it seemed pleasant.
The group exercises were overseen by trainees who gave feedback. It was general but still useful. It was also nice that they had produced booklets etc for us with the day's schedule and booklets about the firm.
We were able to have discussions with employees at a lunch. There was also a speed dating type event with current trainees to outline different aspects of the firm e.g. pro bono, the LPC to TC transition. Following lunch we were also given a tour of the office. I think that it did give me some insight of having a full time role. I think it can be quite hard to do this in just one day when you aren't actually doing work.
I think it was quite successful in showing this. Despite being a large corporate law firm it seemed like people knew each other and that it was a nice place to work at with a variety of people.
I felt the day was better for people who knew that they were going on to do corporate/commercial law and it was to help you hone in on the skills you needed for that.
Everything Else
The option was available to be reimbursed.
Yes, during the lunch there were other trainees, the graduate recruitment team and some associates and partners as well.
It was all quite informal. People just milled around the room and were able to join in on different conversations. There were more trainees than partners though!
Yes, during the chats with various trainees Pro bono was discussed as well as other types of firm related fund raising for their chosen charities.
It was a useful day to prepare me for future assessment days where I was able to meet people in a similar position to me.
