The Role
I couldn't have chosen a better placement. I enjoyed the challange and the ever changing environment. I have experienced other areas of Human Resources for example training and working with a HR advisor so my placement was extremely varied. Corus is a fantastic company to work for.
I have got on well with all my colleagues in my department as well as in other functions of the business. I worked in quite a small team and found our relationship was fantastic. I feel I have been valued as I have been given a lot of responsibility and worked hard and this has been appreciated by my colleagues.
I was given a lot of support throughout my placement, especially when I fist started. My manager was always there to help and offer me guidance as well as the other colleagues in my office. The longer I have worked the less guidance I have needed and I hope I have been a help to the new placement student that I have just had to handover to.
There is never a quiet day when working in Graduate recruitment. I was worried at first that I may not have been as busy as I had hoped but this wasn't the case. I have lots of daily tasks to complete as well as projects but the key to succesfully completing all my tasks is time management. And if I ever felt I did not have enough to keep me busy then all I had to do was ask!!
I was given a huge amount of responsibility during my placement. I was soley responsible for the recruitment of over 30 placement students. This started with advertising, shortlisting candidates, interviewing and inductions. I was also responsible for the management of the current students. I had to attend their placement reviews, maintain holiday balances and generally make sure that they enjoyed their placements at Corus.
I have gained and developed a number of skills throughout my placement. I have spent time at Corus training centre where I attended courses on assessment centres, telephone interview training and core graduate recruiter skills. I have also undertaken training on HR databases and SAP training. What I have found during my placement is that if I wanted to enhance a skill then Corus would help me do that. The training is excellent, the courses are fantastic and something that every placement student and graduate will experience.
The Company
We have quite a large office and half of the staff split there time between being in the office and out on plant. The atmosphere is good and there is a lot of banter especially after an eventful weekend!
The placement scheme set up is organised very well. For most functions there is the opportunity to do a number of placements within the different areas of the plant. We encourage this so that placement students can understand the whole steelmaking process as well as experince different teams and gain experience from different projects. An induction is run at the start of the placements so that placement students can all meet each other and understand more about the company they are coming to work for.
have never felt like a placement student during my time at Corus. The company has invested a lot in me and have offered me sponsorship for my final year at univeristy.
I have been offered sponsorship and a graduate position with Corus.
The Culture
Corus Scunthorpe take on a large amount of Graduates and Placement Students and there is an active social scene. There are a lot of sports clubs such as football and badminton and the pub quiz is always well attended.
Scunthorpe is a very cheap place to live. To rent a nice house is affordable and a night out won't cost you a fortune!
There has been a lot of money invested into Scunthorpe's night life and it has improved over the past year. Scunthorpe is also close to Lincoln, Hull, Doncaster so there is always a new place to go out to.
There were a lot of opportunities for me to get involved with activites outside of work. Corus has a graduate group called Magnet that organise outings such as visits to other plants, bowling, nights out and they also get involved in community projects. Other than that there are a lot sports clubs that advertise for members. I got involved in a lot during my placement.
