About You
There were a good variety of tasks/talks and opportunities to ask questions, meeting people from all different levels throughout the business where you could really see what they did on a day to day basis and what their job involved.
Always well looked after throughout the placement with endless offers of tea and coffee, coupled with people who worked at Unilever and you got to know so never felt like a stranger, everyone was friendly and welcoming.
Couldn't ask for much more, always accompanied by a member of staff and there were endless opportunities to ask questions where you could get honest replies and you were supported and guided throughout as to what the job roles included and what you could expect at the firm etc.
Does what it says and gives you a real insight into what the job includes, showing all the different aspects of the role and what sort of things you'd be expected to do. The assessment centre on the final day really helps prepare you for future interviews, being in depth and thorough but helps you know your own strengths and weaknesses and how to approach such situations. The placement gave a real insight into the corporate training you'd expect with such a firm.
The Company
Was well structured with a variety of different things happening and a clear agenda throughout the placement, there were however almost too many opportunities to ask questions and any minor issues with the structure this year (being the first) will certainly be ironed out by experience.
Throughout the placement you never felt like you were being judged and you could be yourself, there were opportunities to have fun as well as to apply yourself to the role you chose as best you could. As with such placements where you stay in a hotel with the other participants, there is always one subject at the forefront and that perhaps doesn't leave much time to relax or really get to know people but that is no real fault of the placement.
A considerable amount of time and effort was invested in this placement by the company with the use of what seemed to be the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable people in the firm, you were given opportunities to think up your own ideas and really get to know the different products and roles on offer, there were opportunities for you to present your ideas and the assessment centre all helped to develop you and give you valuable experience.
There were continuous opportunities to talk to people who were on the graduate programme and in other full times giving a true understanding of what sort of tasks, hours and responsibilities are involved. You did not however see how an actual work day would be structured and how the tasks would be approached but on an insight this short it is near impossible to do so.
Actually being in the office and speaking to real people from all different areas of the company with them honestly answering the questions posed gave a real understanding of the relaxed yet hardworking company culture.
It did give a clear insight into how varied the role was and so helped you to see whether you were truly interested or whether it was something you wanted to steer clear of. It helped to decide on what future career path you would like to follow within the firm.
Everything Else
Everything was provided during the placement and travel expenses were correctly reimbursed.
You were never without being with other employees of the company from industrial placement students, graduates to managers with plenty of opportunities to interact with them in both formal and informal environments.
There were plenty of opportunities which were well organised with good timekeeping, they also happened in a variety of settings from in the office, meals to over the table football, there were a good mixture of opportunities and they worked well.
Did hear about the different opportunities outside of their role from sports teams to department socials but only relatively briefly as the main questions posed and purpose of the placement was to focus on the working roles within the firm.
It is a great name to have on your CV for a start and it gives you a great insight into how a large corporate firm works, you interact with so many different people and the assessment centre experience will undoubtedly be useful when applying for any future roles in any firm.
