The Role
I enjoyed working with like-minded people in an enthusiastic team.
I felt appreciated and encouraged by both my fellow interns and my manager.
I was provided with a mentor at IBM who pushed me to work to the best of my ability, whilst supporting me when I struggled with aspects of the job. This was particularly important to me as I was in a programming role, despite not having much experience.
As interns we managed our own time and deadlines, but were encouraged to work hard by the dedication of other staff around us.
As mentioned above, we managed our own deadlines, as well as determining the direction of our project. Our manager was supportive where necessary, but mostly we made our own decisions.
I developed good team working skills which will be useful in future employment. I also had plenty of opportunity to improve my public speaking.
The Company
The atmosphere was generally friendly. As interns we were provided with shared accommodation which meant we quickly got to know each other, and didn't struggle to make friends.
The internship was well organised.
My mentor in particular provided lots of opportunity for development, encouraging us to meet up with employees around the lab who were in roles we might be interested in.

Working from home
I was offered a graduate role within the organisation, and had ample opportunity to meet with employees from the relevant departments to decide where I would like to work.
The Culture
As the summer interns lived in shared accommodation we all got to know each other very quickly and spent much of our free time together.
Our accommodation was paid for by IBM. In general Winchester is quite an expensive place to live, but it wasn't unaffordable.
There were lots of nice pubs with good atmospheres. I didn't go to any clubs whilst I was there, but that's due to personal preference. Southampton isn't too far.
There were a few sports teams I think.
