About You
I was in the Corporate Bank and saw many different roles that were on offer here - it was great to see the huge variety of jobs; there is definitely something for everyone
We were in a fairly large group for an insight week but the HR staff were very good at making us feel comfortable. When we did placements around the bank the other employees were respectful and always ready to answer any questions we had
Lots of support all the time - as mentioned before there was no question that wouldn't be answered and lots of information thrown at us to keep us engaged
We had several workshops and interactive talks which were very useful and aimed at improving presentation/communication skills
The Company
Very well structured - we were given a detailed timetable at the beginning of the week
Kept busy all the time. It was a fairly large group but we all got on well and it was nice to be around like-minded people
It is clear that RBS are looking for a particular type of individual and the workshops/skills sessions helped bring out those particular skills. However, as we were a large group it was sometimes difficult to be critiqued and helped to be improved individually (although this is not what an insight week is about!)
We had 4 work shadowing placements in smaller groups which was really good - it was much easier to ask employees questions and see what kind of things they did. In some placements we were given case studies and in another we were given an actual piece of work which I found the most helpful insight. Ideally it would be better to spend more time to see exactly how a day would run in that particular role, but again we only had a week!
It was really interesting being submerged into the bank but I would perhaps liked to have known a bit more about the values the bank likes to work by and how these are included in the variety of roles we looked into
Everything Else
Living in London I was not reimbursed but many people were reimbursed travel and some stayed in a hotel with paid expenses
A few lunches and after-work drinks. Some work placements offered the opportunity to meet different people around the business
A good variety of people from around the bank
Some charity events (didn't hear about any others but I'm sure there are some!)
If they have an interest in financial services but aren't sure whether to go into investment banking or consultancy/accountancy, this would be a good thing to do to help you make up your mind
