About You
The insight was an eye opener into the Magic circle firms and the ethos that the company commands. The insight day was very enjoyable with introductions over teas and coffee and we received talks from many employees of the firm and workshops.
It was not very personal, it was all conducted within a big group and you weren't particularly introduced like family. Only those tasked to help out in the day were helpful other employees tended to ignore you.
The guidance was as good as it could be although the insight day only consisted of talks and the workshop over the cadbury/krafts deal was explained by an associate and thus guidance was not very relevant.
The talks were enjoyable although they gave you very limited skills to develop, the day mainly consisted of being talked at with information about the firm and limited insight/skills in comparison with other firms.
The Company
The insight day was structured very well and the talks and workshops went by perfectly to the clock, except perhaps the introduction as it ran over somewhat although that was intended I believe.
The insight day was mainly with my peers from Exeter so the atmosphere was always very relaxed and enjoyable. Some of the talks were perhaps a bit laborious but the workshop was very enjoyable.
They reimbursed travelling expenses which was a good reimbursement. And they additionally gave us time of trainees, associates and partners. Although one partner who was meant to run the day did cancel explaining the deduction in stars.
I understood that working with Slaughter and May would be a lot of hard work. Although they gave me a good insight as they covered many aspects of life within the firm and outside. Such as cultural talks at lunchtime, regular training sessions and social events outside of work.
It gave me a very good insight into the culture of Slaughter and May. The culture seemed very committed to work and to their clients. Gave a strong work hard play hard culture from Slaughter and May.
It was ok in helping me decide my future career path as they gave limited information about the work they do and only highlighted the massive deals they have done and not day to day work. Not as helpful as other insight schemes.
Everything Else
I was reimbursed travel expenses in cash.
We only got to network at lunchtime when a few trainees were available to talk to, however the associates and partners were very few networking opportunities with them and graduate recruitment.
Only had social events over lunch and very limited over tea and coffee in the morning. But social events during the day were very limited.
A trainee gave a presentation based upon the activities that can be undertaken outside of work such as cultural events, social events, sporting events and many other activities such as theatre events.
It is a very good way to gain an understanding into the culture of a magic circle firm and the type of work they can do. Although there are probably more beneficial schemes out there to give a better view of working as a lawyer in the city.
