About You
We received an exclusive open day for Exeter students. The insight was ok it was rather short and the information upon commercial law was limited. However there were opportunities to socialise with trainees and associates of the firm.
The firm was too large to be valued like family as even some trainees felt like clogs in a machine compared to a smaller city law firm. However we were given the focus of attention from the graduate recruitment team.
The guidance and support was excellent as the graduate recruitment team were firmly focused on guiding us throughout the day through the tasks we had to undertake and the activities we undertook.
It wasn't a waste of time per se but it didn't give me skills for life. The application advice workshop were good skills to improve my applications but skills for my degree studies were rather limited.
The Company
The activities and workshops were structured perfectly one after the other. Although the insight day was pretty short and therefore we only had a limited number of events in which they needed to structure.
The day was very fun and enjoyable, the graduate recruitment were very encouraging and tried to make it as enjoyable as possible and for first year students this was an introduction into law in the city and the type of work they do.
They reimbursed all travel expenses and gave us the time of graduate recruitment and the time of some trainees but very little from associates and partners.
It gave me a very good insight into being a trainee with the firm but nothing more. The associates did not give an impression as I rarely saw them and there was no hint from partners as they were not seen at all.
It was extremely helpful in understanding in the company's culture although the culture is rather disconcerting as partner and associate time was rarely given to us and there was no chance to see partners at lunch as they ate separately.
It was very good in deciding whether law was the right career path although not whether city law specifically is for you and what firm as other firms have very different cultures.
Everything Else
I was reimbursed all travel expenses.
Very few only networking opportunities over lunch with trainees and graduate recruitment. However there were no opportunities for socialising with associates or partners.
Only networking/social events over lunch and at no other times. And again only with trainees and graduate recruitment and not with associates or partners.
They gave a presentation on what you can get up to outside of work, these came in many varieties from social events, cultural events and sporting teams outside of the office.
As always it is good to become involved with law firms if you want a career in the city and it never harms to learn more about the different cultures of the firm and the type of work you can undertake in a magic circle firm.
